Let's talk about cold sores.

Why Cold Sore Treatment Has Been Stuck for 40 Years

  • Topical acyclovir was FDA-approved in 1982.
  • Docosanol (Abreva) arrived in 2000 — a purified behenyl alcohol with a modest track record.
  • Oral antivirals like valacyclovir and famciclovir require precise timing and systemic dosing, and don't address barrier damage or inflammation.

Natural remedies haven't filled the gap, either:

  • Propolis is inconsistent and batch-dependent, often performing no better than placebo.
  • Lysine is used preventatively at best. It doesn't penetrate skin and isn't effective in topical form.
  • OTC gels and sticks mostly numb pain or form a temporary shield — they don't address the underlying process.

The result: cold sore care has looked essentially the same for over 40 years.

Flavonoids: A Known Antiviral, Never Properly Delivered

Flavonoids — bioactive compounds found throughout the plant kingdom — have long been studied for their antiviral properties, including activity against HSV-1. That research isn't new. What's been missing is a way to get them to where the virus actually lives: under the skin.
